Fashion Slang
I’ve been reading fashion magazines since I was in high school, and I always come across with the word “boho” or the “bohemian” icon. it always strewn across fashion celebrities like Victoria Beckham, sienna miller, A/MK Olsen, Nicole Ritchie, etc..but I don’t really have any idea what that means.
I checked Mr. Webster and this is what I got:
Main Entry: Bo·he·mi·an
Pronunciation: \-mē-ən\
Function: noun
1 a: a native or inhabitant of Bohemia b: the group of Czech dialects used in Bohemia
2often not capitalized a: vagabond, wanderer; especially: gypsy b: a person (as a writer or an artist) living an unconventional life usually in a colony with others
— bohemian adjective often capitalized
DOESN’T MAKE SENSE Mr. Webster!!!
Well, boho is short for “bohemian” and is a fashion style modeled after an earthy, hippie-esque look. The overall image is laidback and approachable, with an emphasis on personal comfort and seemingly effortless style.

While “boho” usually refers to fashion, its origin is more about a general lifestyle. The term bohemian originally referred to a citizen of Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Over time, it became associated with gypsies, stemming from the French belief that gypsies came from Bohemia. The modern day “bohemian” is usually an artistic, self-expressive individualist. The bohemian lifestyle is captured in the show (and now, movie) Rent, about a group of starving artists living in New York City. The song from Rent called “La Vie Boheme” is a tribute to this simple, liberated lifestyle.
